Fortress Saga review

Introduction

Today we are going to look at a game named Fortress Saga, this game initially caught my attention with promises of an engaging AFK experience. As an avid mobile gamer, I eagerly dove into this title, hopeful for a captivating adventure. There is supposedly a story, I am intrigued!

What did I think before playing Fortress Saga?

Upon downloading Fortress Saga AFK RPG, the initial impressions were positive. The game boasted a plethora of heroes, promising strategic depth and a rich narrative. The Google Play Store reviews painted a mixed picture, but I decided to give it a fair shot. There was only one thing to do, check the Google Play Store for more information!

The Google Play Store Page

The reviews on the Google Play Store ranged from enthusiastic praise to vehement criticism. Some players lauded the strategic aspects and diverse hero pool, while others bemoaned the game’s progression system and microtransactions. This divide left me cautiously optimistic but aware of potential pitfalls.

Rating

I rated Fortress saga with a 6.7 before playing.
I was not sure what to expect from this game, I had mixed feelings.

Story

The narrative of Fortress Saga unfolds slowly, revealing a world plagued by darkness that players must save. While the premise is not groundbreaking, it serves its purpose. The storytelling lacks the depth to fully immerse players, but it provides a decent backdrop for the gameplay.

Rating

I rate the story of Fortress Saga with a 5.8
A simple story, nothing special to see here, it is just to get the game going.

Gameplay

The strategic element comes into play when choosing and upgrading heroes. The game features a diverse roster, each with distinct skills and roles. Crafting a well-balanced team becomes crucial for success in battles. However, the game leans heavily on auto-battling, where the AI takes charge during encounters. While this simplifies the gameplay for casual enjoyment, it diminishes the sense of control and involvement.

Progression is tied to a familiar upgrade system where heroes gain experience, level up, and unlock new abilities. The gear and equipment mechanics add another layer of strategy, but they also contribute to the game’s microtransaction-focused economy. Acquiring top-tier gear often relies on real-world currency, which may deter players seeking a more balanced free-to-play experience.

One notable feature is the inclusion of various game modes, including campaign stages, dungeons, and PvP arenas. While this variety enhances replayability, it also exposes the game’s reliance on repetitive tasks. The AFK element, while convenient, can make the game feel more like a passive experience rather than an engaging adventure.

The challenge level is somewhat inconsistent, with certain battles feeling trivial while others become frustratingly difficult. This imbalance can affect the overall pacing and enjoyment, leaving players questioning the fairness of certain encounters.

While the AFK mechanic caters to those with limited gaming time, it raises questions about the depth of player engagement. Watching battles unfold without active input can make the experience feel detached, leading to a sense of disconnect from the game world.

Rating

I rated the gameplay of Fortress Saga with a 6.1
There are too many balance issues, and plenty of ads, you also need a lot of money.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

Visually, Fortress Saga is a mixed bag. The character designs are vibrant, and the special effects during battles are commendable. However, the overall aesthetic lacks consistency, and the user interface could benefit from a more polished design.

Sound

The game’s soundtrack and sound effects are serviceable but fail to leave a lasting impression. While they don’t detract from the experience, they also don’t add much to the atmosphere or engagement factor.

Rating

I rated the sound and graphics of Fortress Saga with a 6.4
Nothing special to see here.

What did I think after playing Fortress Saga?

My experience with Fortress Saga left me with a mixed bag of emotions and reflections. The initial allure of an AFK-friendly game was met with a realization that convenience comes at the cost of hands-on engagement. The strategic potential hinted at in the hero roster was somewhat overshadowed by the heavy reliance on automated gameplay.

The convenience of progress while being AFK was a double-edged sword. While it accommodated my busy schedule, it also made me feel like a passive observer rather than an active participant in the game’s world. The lack of meaningful decisions during battles left me yearning for a more interactive experience.

The progression system, a staple in RPGs, felt burdened by the overshadowing presence of microtransactions. While I appreciate the necessity for developers to monetize their games, Fortress Saga seemed to push players toward in-app purchases more aggressively than I would have liked. This created a noticeable divide between those willing to invest real money and those seeking a more traditional free-to-play experience.

Rating

I rated Fortress Saga with a 5.5 after playing.
You need money to play this game!

What are my personal thoughts about The Fortress Saga?

On a personal level, Fortress Saga falls into the realm of mediocrity. While it offers moments of entertainment, the overall experience leaves much to be desired in terms of engagement and depth.

Rating

My personal Rating of Fortress Saga is a 4.9
This game could have been better.

Fortress Saga delivers a passable gaming experience for those seeking a casual, AFK-friendly title. However, it falls short in terms of storytelling, engagement, and overall polish. While it may find a niche among certain players, it fails to stand out in the saturated mobile RPG market.

    • Some do have good AFK mechanics, but there has to be a delicate balance between playing and the AFK elements.

  4. I personally don’t like idle games that much. I hate not being able to move around and play. It’s just a constant movement of enemies, and you just watch.

Once you play one of these, you've played them all.
