Metroid Prime Remaster review

Oh no, they made sequence breaking way too hard in the remaster!

Metroid Prime Remaster review

Introduction

Today we are going to look at a game that is called, Metroid Prime. This is a remastered game, and it has been a while since we saw this game on a new console, where is Metroid Prime 2 remaster, though? In this review, I will b digging into this game, does it still hold up, how are the new graphics? Are the missable items you need to scan fixed? Does it still feel as amazing as it did when I was younger? Let’s find out!

What did I think before playing Metroid Prime remaster?

I was eager to play this game since I have always liked playing Metroid games. However, I was a bit hesitant to see how this remaster played out. What I loved in the original was that you could sequence break a lot of stuff, by locking onto the doors, or stepping onto small platforms. I did dislike the visor switching and hoped that was improved upon, along with some items that you could miss with scanning. For more information, I will check out the Nintendo page.

One thing that I quickly noticed was that the head bobbing function would be removed. It gives motion sickness to plenty of people, like my wife. Next to that, it goes into a lot of detail, which means this game is for the new generation. As long as they resolved the main problems, I am fine with a lot!

Rating

I rated Metroid Prime remaster with an 8.2 before playing.
They spent a lot of time making this remaster, it is kind of normal to assume they fixed the main gripes with the gameplay.

Story

The story is quite simple, as it is with most of the Metroid games. Samus the super powerful bounty hunter who loves to blow up planets investigates something, this time the space pirates who want to use the Metroids as weapons. This spirals out of control as phazon is discovered on Tallon IV,

I rate the story of Metroid Prime remaster with a 7.0
This is one of the better stories, I am still not sure when this game takes place in the timeline.

Gameplay

The gameplay is quite complex for a game that originated on the Gamecube. Although, it starts more simple since you don’t have upgrades. One of the most difficult things to read in this game is the map. Once you get some upgrades, you will be able to switch visors and weapons. This time around, switching is more easy and feels fluid.

One thing I disliked very much about this remaster is that they fixed almost all the sequence breaking, which was a big point of fun in the original version. I know they addressed some issues with the platinum choice and Wii release. However, I owned the first release! Which had great potential for sequence breaking.

As for this version, you have to break through walls with the triclops creatures, which can take hours, or other over the top ideas. Sadly, this diminished the joy that Metroid brings. Once you get the final suit, most of the game becomes a cakewalk. There is still a lot of exploration to be done.

Despite the sequence breaking fixed, I still had hopes for the scanning feature. These were quickly dashed as I forgot to scan the ice Shriekbat and a certain tentacle. Once I realized this, I was like, screw getting 100%. Yes, I could start a new game, but they could have added a secret lab, not even show it on the map and added the missing creatures in some kind of pod.

I rated the gameplay of Metroid Prime remaster with a 6.3
While I wanted to truly enjoy this game, they did not fix the missable items, but they did fix the fun stuff. Dammit.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

While the gameplay might not have panned out very well, the graphics are intense and amazing. To see this game in such high quality made my nostalgia feelings go Brrrrr. Yep, truly, a masterpiece, if only they had paid as much attention to fixing the real problems and giving people freedom to play the game how they want to play it.

Sound

Do I still need to say something? This game even has additional voiceover that we in Europe never got! I loved this additional piece of sound. The ambiance is still creepy, and it feels as epic as when I first played this when I was eleven years old, or was it twelve? Never mind, great soundtracks will rock your world!

I rated the sound and graphics of Metroid Prime remaster with a 9.6
Just, superb!

What did I think after playing Metroid Prime remaster?

While I did enjoy playing this game, and my wife could watch along now without getting motion sickness. I loved scanning all the items, and I still remembered the solution to most of the puzzles. Although, I forgot to scan some items and that is what eventually led me to say, well, fuck that 100% then, I already know the secret cutscene.

What I did enjoy was the fast paced combat, as it was, the first time in the phazon mines is the hardest part. But as soon as you get the phazon suit, you are indestructible. I have tried all the sequence breaks, but they got fixed, which bummed me out a lot, and they did not fix the missable scanning items. All in all, a lovely game, but they could have given it a bit more attention to make it better for the older generation.

Rating

I rated Metroid Prime remaster with a 6,1 after playing.
I loved the graphics and the soundtracks, but the gameplay could have used more work.

What are my personal thoughts about Metroid Prime remaster?

While I did enjoy this game, and I loved my wife could watch along now, which was the reason I had not reviewed the original yet. As soon as I learned about the sequence breaks being fixed, and the missable items still being missable, I rushed the game and was glad that I was done with it. I rather play the original, when my wife is not watching, I don’t want her to get sick because of the head bobbing!

Rating

My personal Rating of Metroid Prime remaster is a 6.8
I had high hopes and sadly, most of them got shattered.

Last Words

Pros

Cons

If you have never played Metroid Prime remaster, then the missing sequence break might not be a huge problem. However, when I was young, we gossiped in school about where to find new sequence breaks, you know before the internet was a big deal. Some people lied and gave me crap information, others gave me amazing tips which led to fun and intense moments as you completely broke the game. I still remember getting the phazon suit as one of the first upgrades. Fun times.

  2. I'd still give it an 8 at least. It's one of the better games out there, and the true metroidvania genre definer.

  5. At first I was really disappointed they didn't do the whole trilogy pack, but now that I see how much work they put into it get why. And I really hope they give the other 2 the same treatment.

  8. Game remaster looks great but original looked good too. Gameplay wise looks like developers didn't understand breaking the game is fun for players 😉 (so they broke it lol)

    • It's something that is almost in every Metroid game. We players love to break the game! I played the original, but in the second release, they patched the biggest and easiest sequence breaking, but they kept the harder ones for the players who really wanted to try it.
