Metroid: Spooky Mission review

Introduction

Today we are going to look at another Rom hacked game, we’ll play some spooky Metroid. This game seems to be based on Metroid from the Game Boy Advance. The creator of this Rom Hack has tried to keep that creepy feeling of Metroid while you need to explore a new and unknown environment. Can you survive? Or will the spooky monsters take you to the depths of this new place that you need to discover?

What did I think before playing Metroid: Spooky Mission?

I had no idea what to expect from this game. Except that I had a new Metroid to try out, and it won some kind of contest a few years ago. It seemed to have a few major areas and a small hub. Which would mean that exploration takes key since you will need to find where to go next. To see if there was more information, I decided to check the Rom station page.

The Rom Station page

While the page itself does not provide a lot of extra information, you can find the download link for this game on this site. Yes, it is free! There is also a speed run video on this site, and it got me enticed, it seems like a fun Metroid game.

Rating

I rated Metroid: Spooky Mission with a 7.2 before playing.
Time to explore a new world!

Story

I could tell you the story, but I can also show it to you.

Rating

I rated the story of Metroid: Spooky Mission with a 5.5
While it is a neat story, it is just there to make sure you have a game to play.

Gameplay

The gameplay is fairly simple, it mostly involves you getting lost while looking for where the hell you need to go. You start out weakly, with no real armor or weapons. You cannot even morph into a cube, I mean a ball. Thus, you will need to explore this new planet to find the upgrades to continue getting lost.

There are, of course, fun tricks that you can perform, one of the tricks I love the most, is the bomb trick. You know, the one where you morph into a ball and jump to insane heights by using bombs. These can net you early missiles in this game if you look closely enough at the map, where secrets are hidden. The best thing is that I had no clue where things were, I can still dream most of the Metroid games.

There are also bosses that you will need to face in this game, they can be tough creepy crawlies. But, I struggled the most with using a keyboard and the jump and attack button. Once I have trained some more with the correct controls, the boss battles will become much easier. If you are expecting an easy game, then you are looking at the wrong game.

I rated the gameplay of Metroid: Spooky Mission with a 7.4
I enjoyed the game a lot.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics are exactly what you would expect from Metroid. There are new monsters to fights, creepy spiders to mutilate and also some original monsters. Most of the text has been rewritten to fit the spooky theme. Cower, fearing the weird spiders that crawl around.

Sound

I liked the soundtracks, and the sound effects of this game. All in all, just Metroid.

I rate the sound and graphics of Metroid: Spooky Mission with an 8.3
The sound and graphics are precisely what you would think of Metroid!

What did I think after playing Metroid: Spooky Mission?

I had a great time when playing this game, exploring a whole new world. With many monsters, I have not encountered before, and the weird texts made it even more funny, or well, spooky. The hardest thing for me was to get used to the controls. After that game went much easier since I did not play with a controller, I might try that the next time.

I enjoyed the most that the game allows you to freely explore the world. There is no linearity, you can just go and explore, but if you hit a bump, you might need to take a different route. With some tricks, you can even access areas that you should not be in. Maybe you can find some more goodies, or you might need to turn around to look for another open door.

I rated Metroid: Spooky Mission with a 7.9 after playing.
If you are looking for a good Rom hacked Metroid, then this is the perfect game for you!

What are my personal thoughts about Metroid: Spooky Mission?

I like the idea that people can just change so much in a game, that it becomes a whole new game! I enjoyed playing through this game more than I had expected.
