Megaman X reporting for duty!

Megaman X1 revamped review

Introduction

Today we are going to look at a Megaman X game, the first one, of course. I have reviewed the first part of the Megaman X collection; however, I am now going to take a closer look at the Megaman games, starting with Megaman X1. Are you ready to destroy some robots with X-buster? I will not be writing the story in this review, instead you can look at this review for the first four storylines!

This was one of the earlier reviews, I know there are no pictures, but I have made it grammatically correct. I hope you enjoy reading the stories!

What did I think before replaying Megaman X1?

I have come back to this game multiple times, I first played this game as a kid, a very long time ago. One of my first platforming side scroller games. Since then, I occasionally come back to this game and marvel at the difficulty of this game compared to some games that people make these days. Fall into a hole? Instant death. Did you get hit by an enemy? You will take a lot of damage, I am excited to replay this game again! For more information, we will go to the Fandom page of Megaman!

The Fandom Page

This site holds a lot of information on all the levels that you will be making your way through. There are many secrets that await you in these levels, extra health, new upgrades, and even a special Easter egg attack if you do manage to gather all the upgrades. Of course, there is a safe way of picking what levels you want to tackle firstly. There are many guides on what levels to tackle, and in what order.

Rating

I rated Megaman X1 with an 8.7 before playing.
If you are looking for some decent action with tight controls and shooting up robots in a side-scroller, then this is a good game!

Gameplay

The gameplay is fairly simple, you mostly walk to the right, but sometimes hidden in the upper-left corner are secrets. Each level has its own distinct theme, for example, the Chill Penguin world has a lot of snow—related elements and monsters. This, of course, comes with its soundtrack and upgrades. This level might be the most important one since you will unlock one of the four major upgrades in this level, the ability to dash and jump.

As you make your way through the levels, you will need to shoot up the robots in the way. At the end of each stage, you will encounter a boss who needs to be taken down. All bosses have their patterns, and they can dish out heavy damage. But if you manage to take them down, you will get a new weapon, which will be the weakness of the next boss if you pick the right level, look up the order and don’t enter levels randomly.

As you get new upgrades, like the helmet upgrade, you might need to backtrack to get new sub tanks. You are going to need these for the final levels, where you will once again face off with some earlier bosses. I hope you remembered what their weaknesses were. Otherwise, Google might be of assistance. The last levels are very hard to complete, but if you manage to defeat the final boss, you will be rewarded with a neat cutscene.

Rating

I rated the gameplay of Megaman X1 with a 9.5
The gameplay is very fun, you can choose in what order you want to complete the levels, there are quite a lot of gameplay mechanics. The only thing that bothers me, is that there is no option to save the game. Luckily, an emulator can do that for you these days!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics of Megaman X1 are actually excellent, there are many sprites, plenty of bosses to face, and many themed levels. You have to realize this game is over twenty years old, and it has stood the age of time, as it still looks pretty. You can clearly see how much time and work has been put in to make this game visually appealing!

Sound

The soundtrack of Megaman X1 is very fun to listen to, each level has its track, which might sound as if there are not many soundtracks but back in the day, this was wonderful! The sound effects are good as well, pew pew pew!

Rating

I rated the sound and graphics of Megaman X1 with a 9.1
For an old game, the graphics, and soundtrack are astonishing!

What did I think after playing Megaman X1?

This is a game that I have enjoyed since my childhood, a game that I regularly come back to. My wife is not very interested in Megaman, it is just not her thing. That brings me to the next thing, you do have to like Megaman, and you either like these games, or you don’t. Luckily, there are many spin-offs with different gameplay, like Megaman Battle Network to name one of them.

While Megaman has gotten a Megaman 11 recently, it might be time to start hoping for a Megaman X9 game! That is something I have been looking forward to for a long time. Did you know, Megaman X8 released all the way back in 2004? It makes me feel old that I played the game when it released, and that I have been waiting almost twenty years for a new installment.

I rated Megaman X1 with an 8.9 after playing.
The first game is off to a good start, with a decent story, fun gameplay, and diverse graphical elements!

What are my personal thoughts about Megaman X1?

This game holds numerous memories for me, as it might have been the first side-scroller I have ever beaten as a small child. It reminds me of blowing the cartridge if it did not work. I am still wondering, is that bad or not?

Rating

My personal Rating of Megaman X1 is a 9.3
Time to bust up some robots!

  14. nice one, i remember you can even get Hadouken in one of the stages 🤣

    Reply
    • That is correct, you need to gather every upgrade, heart upgrade, sub tank, then you need to go to one of the capsules. I can not remember which one correctly, but then you will get the Hadouken and it absolutely wrecks bosses.
