Would you like to become a pokémon?

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX review

Introduction

Are you up for a Pokémon game review, we are going to review Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX, this is an upgraded version of a game that released in 2005 on the Game Boy Advance. To start this game, you will be interviewed and based upon the answers, you get to be a different Pokémon! You can however choose your partner, we became a Mudkip and Eevee joined us! This is a dungeon crawler game, danger awaits you around every corner! It is your job to rescue the Pokémon that succumbed to those dangers!

What did I think before playing Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX?

This is a genre that we did not yet review actively on Reviews by Supersven, a dungeon crawler! I originally played this game way back when it released on the Game Boy Advance! Seeing it remade for the Nintendo Switch filled me with joy! As I barely remembered what the game was about, I had to look up the information. How many Pokémon exist now? Too many to count? Let us visit the Nintendo Page!

The Nintendo Page

As you can see, you will be turned into a random Pokémon, and it is your goal to recruit other Pokémon, but they do need a place to stay, build camps where they can stay. The same weaknesses and strengths from the original game are back! This means that you cannot mindlessly attack all the Pokémon that you encounter. Who knows, you might even recruit legendary Pokémon like Mew!

Rating

I rate Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX with an 8.4 before playing,
Time to turn ourselves into a Pokémon!

Story

You find yourself awaken in a strange land, but your memories are gone. You have the nagging feeling that you were not a Pokémon before, though. Soon, you find another Pokémon that enrolls you into a rescue team to save other Pokémon. It is your goal to save other Pokémon and find out the truth.

Rating

I rate the story of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX with a 9.5
You might think, what a high rating! However, this game has many plot twists, and it had us wondering how the story would end.

Gameplay

The gameplay consist of mostly taking jobs for areas that you can visit. These jobs are Pokémon in trouble, and it is up to you to save them. Some of them might even join your team! When walking in dungeons, it is your goal to find the final floor, this is either just the exit or maybe even a boss is awaiting you. When you encounter enemies in a dungeon, you can choose from the moves that you have learned your Pokémon but if your power points are empty, you will need an ether! If your teammates are next to you, they can also attack the opponent!

As you clear more jobs, your rescue rank will go up, meaning more places to go and other Pokémon to find! However, they do need a home when they join you. This can be done in town where you can buy more land where your friends can chill. These are quite expensive, and it will take some time to buy them all. You can safely store your money at the bank. There is also a shop that refreshes each time you have cleared a job.

If you think min maxing in this game is needed, you are wrong as you can farm status items pretty easily, meaning you can have max stats very early on. No need to train to level 100 in the training dojo! There are also dungeons that you need to enter which lower your level temporarily back to level five, we tried this dungeon with Kabuto!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX with a 9.2.
The gameplay is amazing, you will find yourself sucked in this game as you rescue more and more Pokémon! You can even mega evolve some Pokémon, including Groudon and Kyogre, if you can let them join your team!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics are great in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX, the remade graphics look like someone water painted it. There are many colorful scenes and lots of different Pokémon to encounter. The graphics have been overhauled majorly compared to the original, and it shows!

Sound

The soundtracks are fun to listen to, for a game this old that has been remade, there were more than I had expected. My wife and I enjoyed it thoroughly!

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX with an 8.7.
We really need more remakes like this!

What did I think after playing Pokémon Mystery dungeon DX

I am about to say something that I almost never do about a game, there is too much replay value! Recruiting all the legendary and normal Pokémon is going to take you ages. And do not forget about the ranks that you can acquire! Every rank up will upgrade something, it might let you carry more items, or maybe you can take on more jobs at the same time!

If you want a true mean machine that can clear the whole game with ease, you need to get an Altaria and feed it gummies until it gets the skill rapid bulls eyes, this will allow your Pokémon to attack almost five times in one turn! Shred those bosses into pieces! This also works on some other Pokémon, but there are also a load of other useful abilities!

Rating

I rate Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX with a 8.2 after playing.
If you are looking for a fun Pokémon game with an actual story, this is the game that you are looking for, however this game is for the Nintendo Switch!

What are my personal thoughts about Pokémon Mystery dungeon DX?

While the initial game was a lot of fun, when you get to the end game, you will need to replay the same dungeons over and over again. Despite there being many dungeons to explore, this can be quite a slog to level up your rank! It seemed like an impossible task to get the highest rank!

Rating

My personal Rating of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX is a 7.7
Transform into a Pokémon and crawl through dungeons without the penalty of real death? Sure why not!

  5. Yet another game stuck on consoles. Though this one seems meh enough that I wouldn't miss it if it never made it to PC.

    • In my opinion, it would be neat for people to be able to choose which game they want to play on the PC. They might need something like Steam for Nintendo games!

  6. Something about the gameplay loop is just really addictive to me. I keep hearing a lot of people that don't like the way it is, but I guess it just takes a lot of patience and being used to monotonous tasks.

    • While it is indeed fun, it can get boring after fifty hours of doing the same jobs to rescue those Pokémon!

  8. Only from Supersven will large replay value is ever referred to as a disadvantage.

    • There is such thing as, too much replay value. There needs to be just the perfect amount, this game will have you do the same thing over 200 hours to get the highest rank. There is not much variation on what you will be doing in that time period. Thus, it is a con, not enough variety, too many hours needed for the highest rank.

  10. I used to play Pokemon Dungeon a lot in Nintendo DS. Never understood how to recruit a Pokemon, just randomly beat it and they follow me.

    Reply
    • You need to build a camp for them, once you beat them, they might follow you around. Then leave or beat the dungeon with them alive. After that, they will go to said camp. Then you can use that Pokémon however you like!

      • That makes sense, when I stopped playing, I was still living in Wiglypuff Guild. I'll try to go further next time I play an Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.
