Resident Evil Revelations review

Why are there so many ghost ships?

Resident Evil Revelations review

Introduction

Today we are going to look at more creatures created from a deadly virus! This time we will be heading into the first spin-off from Resident Evil, Resident Evil Revelations. You will pay as different characters in this game, mostly Jill Valentine! However, Chris Redfield is also in this game. You will need to investigate an abandoned ship to find out where this new virus came from. Who knows what horrors await you on this ship?

What did I think before playing Resident Evil Revelations?

We had a lot of fun when playing Resident Evil 2, and we were interested in reviewing more Resident Evil games, this was one of the first Resident Evil games that came to our mind! Ghost shop? Check! Recognized characters in the franchise? Check! We knew it was a third person and that it would feature two characters. For more information, we checked the Steam page!

The Steam Page

What stood out the most was the idea that you could scan items or even the monsters. This will give you more information or even reward you items! The spine-chilling fear sounded like a great thing for a Resident Evil game as well. The main thing that draws me in, is new enemies that you can kill. What puzzles will await us in this ghost ship?

Rating

I rate Resident Evil Revelations with a 7.8 before playing.
If you like chasing monsters on a ghost ship while solving puzzles, this might be the perfect game for you!

Story

A huge city is destroyed by a terrorist organization with mutated humans. It seemed that the terrorist organization was taken down, but there might be a resurgence. Jill Valentine and Ray Parker are sent to investigate a ship, but things go horribly wrong!

Rating

I rate the story of Resident Evil Revelations with a 6.6.
While it is a fun story, the ending felt very rushed and made no sense at all.

Gameplay

This game takes place in episodes, with each episode featuring different characters. The main characters are Jill Valentine and Ray Parker, whom need to investigate the ghost ship with mutated zombies. As you investigate the ship, you will need to scan every nook and cranny to find ammo, otherwise you will run out. You can also use your knife to take down mutated humans. Getting hurt means that you will need to use a green herb, which can be found or earned by scanning dead mutated zombies.

As you find more weapons, you will also find more custom parts that can be added to your guns. Which will make them stronger, however, it is only Jill that can do this for some reason. All other characters have their own weapons. This means that ammo is not shared between characters. You do need enough ammo to end the episode, the better you do, the higher your rank for completing the episode!

After completing the main game, you will unlock a new game mode that is basically the main game without cut scenes. You will be rushed through pieces of the main story while finding new guns and other custom parts. All characters have their own unique ability that will increase damage with certain weapons. You will also need to level up in this mode to deal more damage!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Resident Evil Revelations with a 7.6.
The gameplay can be fun but is mostly janky, the dodging is hard without a button actually assigned to it. The raid mode is just the main game without cutscenes, it also made no sense that only Jill could upgrade her weapons.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

While it is fun to look at mutated humans and blow their brains out, the graphics are fun to look at! Mostly at the end, however, the game is rushed. Which shows with the graphical assets. The character assets look a bit bland. The map is very hard to read.

Sound

The soundtracks are great, it makes the ship even more creepy, expect jump scares at the worst moments! The monsters make creepy sounds as they try to devour you!

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Resident Evil Revelations with a 6.3.
While it is a fun game to look at, it has some big issues with the graphics and sound!

What did I think after playing Resident Evil Revelations?

The game starts out fun, with a great entrance and booming soundtracks. Amazing characters and cutscenes, it goes downhill very fast after that. The controls are very janky, dodging is almost impossible since there is no actual button to dodge in this game. Running out of ammo, is more annoyingly this way compared to other games where dodging works better. Running feels very off, especially with the wonky hit boxes.

I had hoped the raid mode would be co-op, however it was only single player unless you pay a subscription and have someone else with a switch and the game. This would work much better on the computer. Leveling up took ages, and farming points to even refill your ammo was almost impossible with how much it costed.

Rating

I rate Resident Evil Revelations with a 7.2 after playing.
While it is a fun game, a lot of it seems rushed!

What are my personal thoughts about Resident Evil Revelations ?

While nearing the end of the game, I just wanted to rush to the end, I wanted it to be over. The final boss was odd and dealt way too much damage on normal.

Rating

My personal Rating of Resident Evil Revelations is a 6.0
I hope that the next game in the franchise will be better!

If you are interested in ghost ships, this might be the perfect game for you! However, your ally barely does a thing in this game. And they have unlimited ammo!

    • Survival horror is a genre that is not around much anymore. Mostly it is action games now, pew pew that zombie to dead!

  12. For a spin-off I think it's pretty decent, especially considering that it was originally released for 3ds if I remember correctly, and in this remaster they didn't make many changes. It won't be one of the best Resident Evil, but it's not one of the worst either.

    • They did not make the controls better for the console, that is too bad. It needed a dodge button, lol!
