Dragonball Kart 64 review

Hey Piccolo, do you want to race?

Dragonball Kart 64 review

Introduction

Today we are going to check out a ROM hack! This is a ROM hack from the game Mario Kart 64, it has been transformed into Dragonball Kart 64! Is this a fun game to race in? You can ride a car with Goku, who wants to fly when you can drive, right? The levels have also been changed. If you like to race as Krillin, or six other characters from the Dragonball Franchise, then this might be a fun game for you. There is no story, just, drive that car.

What did I think before playing Dragonball Kart 64?

I actually came across this game accidentally. While scrolling through the endless hell that is Facebook, I came across a trailer for this game. After some research, I managed to find where I could download and play it. I knew that I had to race, but I did not know what to expect. There was only one way to find out more about this game.

The Romstation page

https://www.romstation.fr/games/n64/dragon-ball-kart-64-r69310/

This is where you can get some information on this game. Of course, this is a game for the Nintendo 64. You will need an Emulator to play this game. You can also play as Vegeta in this game, but the characters that are not playable do make appearances in the levels that have also been altered.

Rating

I rated Dragonball Kart 64 with a 7.0 before playing.
This looks like a decent ROM hack, especially if you like Dragonball Z.

Gameplay

The gameplay is not very different compared to the original Mario Kart 64. You pick your driver, there are still eight of them. After that, you will need to choose what cup you are going to do. After selecting said cup, you will need to do four races in a row and hope to claim the first place.

There are many aesthetic changes compared to the original game. Next to the races having different names, you will encounter all kinds of items from the Dragonball franchise. There is even a sign with Goku that says, Kentucky. Yeah, there are also rolling Buu balls in his level.

The items, while doing mostly the same, also look different. You can get energy balls and throw them at your opponent, or summon Shenron to shrink your opponents. Heck, there are even Senzu beans, these act as mushrooms. I bet Goku gave on to Perfect Cell.

Rating

I rated the gameplay of Dragonball Kart 64 with a 7.7.
The gameplay is solid, and you can still play this game together! It might require some setup.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

I think the graphics, considering they are from the Nintendo 64, are spectacular. It seems like a lot of trouble to replace all of these sprites from Mario to Dragonball. While the levels are not that different, it is kind of funny seeing all those Dragonball themed items. Did you know, the ability to become a ghost is a face of Yamcha? Probably because he keeps dying.

Sound

The soundtracks are different, but I enjoyed the voice acting a lot. There is something hilarious about Goku slipping over a banana and screaming, dammit!

Rating

I rated the sound and graphics of Dragonball Kart 64 with an 8.1
Hey Piccolo, want to drive cars?

What did I think after playing Dragonball Kart 64

I had a lot of fun when playing this game. I have to admit, I enjoyed this a lot more than I had expected to. There is something great about playing a racing game and sitting on the edge of your seat, trying to get that first place. I especially love the photo finishes!

My favorite character has to be Goku, I don’t have a lot with Beerus since I have not seen Dragonball Super yet. Maybe it is time for that. I liked this game a lot more compared to Mario Kart 64. The items and how they are depicted are amazing!

Rating

I rated Dragonball Kart 64 with an 8.5 after playing.
I think it is amazing how someone can make one game, into another game.

What are my personal thoughts about Dragonball Kart 64?

I usually don’t like racing games a lot, but I do love Dragonball. It was one of the anime series I watched when I was younger.  Combining these two seems to be a good idea.

Rating

My personal Rating of Dragonball Kart 64 is an 8.1
Time to go driving!

Pros

Cons

The dragonball gives you star powers in this game, but Shenron causes lightning. I wonder which one is better.
