Slay the Spire Downfall review

Are you ready to Slay the Spire once again?

Slay the Spire Downfall review

Introduction

Today we are going down, down, down in a ring of cards to Slay the Spire once again! But why are we going down? We are going to play the fan made DLC, Downfall! This time you will be climbing down the Spire instead of up, also you are the boss hunting down the heroes of the original game! All bosses have their own mechanics, cards and even relics! You will need to level them up to gain access to all the new content, the old heroes also have some new content!

What did I think before playing Slay the Spire Downfall?

Slay the Spire has released a fan made DLC with a Steam page! However, you can also use the Steam workshop, but for this review I wanted the original Downfall mod without other expansions. Thus, we downloaded it from the Steam page, which came with an easy launcher. I did not know what to expect, but I really wanted to test out the slimy boss and the champion! For more information, I went to the Steam page.

The Steam page

The first thing that I see is that this free DLC is overwhelmingly positive while being made by a modder! Interested, I checked out the Steam page! There is a lot of information to process, like all the new characters. One of them is a new hero that uses guns called the Hermit. IF you like Slay the Spire, you can download this mod and have many hours of gameplay added for free.

Rating

I rate Slay the Spire Downfall with an 8.9 before playing.
It seems to be great quality, with good information beforehand what will be added, and best of all, it is free!

Story

The story takes the perspective from the bad guy, the heart of evil. Whereas you first needed to defeat it, you will now need to protect the heart while playing as a boss from the spire. You will need to hunt down heroes as your favorite boss and protect the heart. If you can manage it, you can also take down Neow to save the heart for good!

Rating

I rate the story Slay the Spire Downfall with a 7,2
While the story might not be great, it is still an amazing turnaround of the original game.

Gameplay

The gameplay of this mod is not all that different from the original Slay the Spire. You pick your boss and start bashing heads as you gather cards and try out new builds. I had the feeling that most of the new boss characters are balanced. The new events are great and also address you as a ruler of the spire. However, the gremlin group character was not made for me, as I cannot even defeat the first boss with them!

Instead of gold, you collect the souls of the fallen enemies, if you think you can spend these at the merchant, you are wrong. When you enter the merchant shop, a battle will begin across all acts where you need to hunt him down and beat him up. However, after either defeating him or failing in each attempt, the Heart will show up and offer you cards for souls. Feed me!

Just as in the normal game, ascension is an important part of the game, whenever you manage to clear three acts, the secret act not included, you rank up your ascension level next to your normal level. This means that the difficulty will increase little by little. It is wise to test out characters and use the one that you think can take you the farthest! Off course, I used the Slime boss and the champion the most!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Slay the Spire Downfall with an 8.4
The game offers a lot more solid builds and the ability to experiment, while also fleshing out the old heroes. I am still trying to get a hold of how the new Hermit works.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics of Slay the Spire downfall are amazing. The new cards that have been added for the bosses would have taken an insane amount of time to create, the animations that the bosses use are great. The mechanics also change how some bosses function, one of the bosses can hide in a shell while another can light flames.

Sound

The soundtracks are great, along with fun sound effects for each boss. However, there is some overlap with the original version of Slay the Spire.

I rate the sound and graphics of Slay the Spire Downfall with a 7.4
I think there have been some major improvements and all the new card designs are amazing!

What did I think after playing Slay the Spire Downfall?

I had a lot of fun, my two favorite bosses were the Slime Boss and the Champion. The Slime Boss uses a special goop mechanic, but you can also split into smaller slimes that will help you in combat! I am now working on beating Ascension level five, Will I make it in the next run? Watch the video below for the answer!

The original heroes also got some new cards to use, you can even get boss cards! There were some weird bugs, one of them placed me in the wrong game mode with a hero! It ended up with me fighting myself and Neow at the end, it seems I have a character that turned evil!

Rating

I rate Slay the Spire Downfall with an 8.6 after playing!
If you are interested in playing this expansion, it is even free if you own Slay the Spire on Steam.

What are my personal thoughts about Slay the Spire Downfall?

I had a great time while playing slay the Spire Downfall, I still have not mastered the Snecko boss as it can be quite confusing!

Rating

My personal Rating of Slay the Spire Downfall is an 8.8
Time to slime you up!

  9. This mod sounds awesome, thanks for reviewing it! It's amazing to see what talented and hardcore fans of something can create and sometimes what they come up with is even better than the original game! Also, do you normally review non-official content in addition to regular games, or does it have to meet certain criteria (be a mod of a game you need to buy first, etc.)? It's cool and helpful to see you review this sort of thing regardless!

  10. I have Slay the Spire on my wishlist and I will definitely use this DLC if I ever get the game! It looks incredible and I'm sure a lot of work and creativity went into it! It's cool to turn the tables and try to defeat what would be the powerful player character from the boss' perspective!
