Super Mario Bowser’s Fury review

Time to shine a light on this cat world!

Super Mario Bowser’s Fury review

Introduction

Another Super Mario game, it seems that we have finished a lot of Super Mario games recently, this time we are going to look at Super Mario Bowser’s Fury! This is a game that is on the same disc as Super Mario 3D World, but it is not the same game! Whereas Super Mario 3D World has you follow quite a linear path through worlds, Bowser’s Fury is a small open world where you visit islands to gather cat shines to stop Bowser!

What did I think before playing Super Mario Bowser's Fury?

While the story is a little different compared to other Super Mario games, it is not huge or very well explained until you get to the end of the game where the credits will roll. However, what I did see were some elements from Super Mario Sunshine return, like the goop! However, F.L.U.D.D is not in this game, instead you will have Bowser Junior help you, for more information we went to the Nintendo page for more information!

The Nintendo page

https://supermario3dworld.nintendo.com/bowsers-fury/
Nintendo has a flashy site for information! The important thing is, off course, that you can play co-op! This does make the game easier though, but a lot more fun! It is your job to stop Bowser when while he is going berserk! Not only that, everything is cat themed, yes, everything. Even the birds are cat themed, also the dinosaur that you ride on in multiple levels!

Rating

I rate Bowser’s Fury with an 8.8 before playing.
It sounds like fun to explore a small open world where there are practically no loading screens!

Story

The story starts with Mario taking a small walk around Peaches Castle, when he suddenly finds goop, which reminds him of a past adventure! Just as Mario expected, he finds the evil painted M of shadow Mario! While investigating the evil M, Super Mario gets teleported to a different dimension. Here he finds Bowser going rampant, using the cat shines he will try to stop giant Bowser with the help of Bowser Junior!

Rating

I rate the story of Bowser’s Fury with a 6.0
While it is unique to focus on an older game from Super Mario, this game does not put much emphasis on the story!

Gameplay

The gameplay of Super Mario World, Bowser’s Fury takes place in a small open world that contains multiple islands. Each island has a different theme and multiple cat shines to collect, however some missions only appear later! Thus, you need to travel between islands, but there is no fast travel until you have beaten the game at least once.

There are a lot of power ups to collect, you can store up to five of each power-up! You might need them when Bowser will wake up, he will rampage and attack you with massive blocks and fire breathing attacks! However, some cat shines can only be collected by utilizing Bowser’s fire breath! When you do collect the cat shine, Bowser will go back to sleep again!

After collecting enough cat shines, you will need to fight Bowser! Since Bowser is huge, you need to grow as well but to do that, you will need enough cat shines to ring the giant bell! Cue the epic music as you fight Bowser, after defeating each phase, you will unlock new islands! Since it is a small open world, there are only 100 cat shines!

Rating

I rate the gameplay, Bowser’s Fury, with a 9.3!
While the open world is small, it shows what might be an even greater game in the future!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics of Super Mario Bowser’s Fury are quite good! This game is a technical marvel and feels like a huge tech demo, but a good one! I can see how amazing a huge open world with Super Mario would be! If you like the game Super Mario Odyssey, you will most likely love this game, but there is no triple jump sadly!

Sound

The music is very good, especially when the huge boss fights start! The sound effects are also very good, but I wish F.LU.D.D at least made a cameo!

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Bowser’s Fury with a 10.
While this feels like a huge tech demo, it is quite a huge marvel to create a small open world with actually no loading screens! Also, the switching between graphics when Bowser awakens is quite smooth!

What did I think after playing Super Mario Bowser's Fury?

My wife and I had a great time when collecting the cat shines! The different themes of the islands were very fun to explore! Luckily we unlocked fast travel after clearing the game once, we off course continued to collect all 100 cat shines! This unlocked a special fight against Giga Bowser!

The co-op made the game very easy but fun nonetheless, there were only a few pesky cat shines to gather. Skating on the ice while collecting blue coins comes to mind, however one of the most fun cat shines, was actually collecting cats and bringing it back them back to their mother!

Rating

I rate Bowser’s Fury with an 8,3 after playing,
I wanted more islands to explore, but it was very fun to explore the islands that were available!

What are my personal thoughts about Super Mario Bowser's Fury?

I would suggest playing this game instead of Super Mario 3D World, we enjoyed this game a lot more! We did really enjoy the co-op mode in Bowser’s Fury!

Rating

My personal Rating of Bowser’s Fury is 8.9!

  1. Mario, co-op, and cat theme? What a game it is! 🙂

  2. This sounds really fun and unique like Super Mario Odyssey, which is a lot better than what many mainline Mario games like Super Mario 3D World are like (still fun, but not really astounding or risk taking, just the typical Mario formula). It's a shame it was tacked onto 3D World as a sort of tech demo rather than being a full fledged game of its own, but hopefully the developers learned enough to go that route someday and will take note of positive fan reception?
