Super Mario Bros the Lost Levels

Beware of poison mushrooms, they will kill you!

Super Mario Bros the Lost Levels

Introduction

Today we are going back into the year 1986, the time when developers actually cared about their games, the quality was very good and few developers keep up this practice as of now! I always wanted to play and review Super Mario Bros, but that seemed less fun compared to what I have in store for this review, we are going to review Super Mario Bros the Lost Levels! To play this game, you will need to buy the Super Mario All Stars bundle! These levels were so hard, they were actually removed from the USA and Europe release! Everything wants to kill you, even the mushrooms, time for a bad trip! This is Super Mario Bros on steroids, there is no story except that you need to rescue Toad, uhh, I mean Princess Peach!

What did I think before playing Super Mario Bros the Lost Levels?

Originally dubbed Super Mario Bros 2, the Lost Levels were too much for a lot of gamers, Dark Souls is nothing compared to this game! Even Nintendo of Japanese got frustrated and decided this was not a good game for the rest of the world! Thus, another Super Mario Bros 2 was born, but Super Mario Bros the Lost Levels was eventually released anyway worldwide ten years later, this is only for gamers that wanted a real challenge! There is not an official page anymore, thus we need to go to the Wikipedia page to find more information on this game before playing!

The Wikipedia Page

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros.:_The_Lost_Levels
On this page you can find a lot of information, including that this is the first time that Luigi got added with his unique characterizations of jumping differently! The fact that this game was too frustrating to release outside of Japan might have been a good idea, as this might still be the most difficult game ever created by Nintendo, they did not want another video game crash in the market off course! Imagine all of those gamers throwing their NES out of the window in frustration!

Rating

I rate Super Mario Bros the Lost Levels with a 7.7 before playing.
I think I rather play the original Super Mario Bros, or Super Mario Bros 2 because they are much easier, this is just a game that cheats to kill you! Also, why is there a blooper like creature flying around!?

Gameplay

Whereas Super Mario Bros has a good curve in difficulty, not too many enemies, a lot of mushrooms and other upgrades, Super Mario Bros the Lost Levels throws this all in the wind! In fact, you are going to get poisoned by a lot of the mushrooms, they hate you now! They want you to die, better avoid them if they are purple, or you will go on a bad trip! I bet kids got nightmares from evil mushrooms chasing them!

There are a lot of enemies, along with new enemies that will impede your path! There will be zillions of them, this will also include many difficult enemies that you would normally face in the later worlds! You will visit eight worlds, including a special world if you do not use warp zones! If you complete the game eight times without dying, there are also special worlds labeled A to D, there is an only a very small percentage that have even seen those worlds!

I am sorry, but your Toad is another castle, I am not your Toad!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Super Mario Bros Lost Levels with an 8.0.
If you are trying to find a difficult game, this is the perfect game!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics are very old school for this era, if you like the NES themed graphics, this game is very good in the graphics department. There are a lot of enemies that have been added, like the flying bloopers! The poison mushroom has a good indicator of a bad trip, it is going to chase you!

Sound

The music is a little better compared to the original Super Mario Bros, however for the NES, this game has amazing soundtracks and sound effects!

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics with a 9.2!
This game has top-notch sound and graphics for the NES era!

What did I think after playing Super Mario Bros the Lost Levels?

What a thrilling ride, getting killed by poison mushrooms is never fun! The bloopers were like, you can’t touch this! I understand why they did not release this game initially! No one would have a NES anymore after playing this game, cue the flying NES consoles through the window! I do hope that they did disconnect the Television though, however those were very heavy back then, maybe it stopped them from flying!

If you do not like difficult games, it might be better for you to play the original Super Mario Bros 2! That one is based on another game called Doki Doki Panic but repurposed with Super Mario Characters! How dare they keep us from throwing NES consoles around!

Rating

I rate Super Mario Bros the Lost the Levels after playing with a 7.2 after playing.
This is….a poisonous mushroom!

What are my personal thoughts about Super Mario Bros the Lost Levels?

While I did have a lot of fun when playing this game, my first attempt was horrible when I was expecting the same difficulty as the original Super Mario Bros. Also I had forgotten that Luigi jumps differently already in this game! I even recorded my first horrible attempt, but nonetheless, I did enjoy this game! Even though I was not able to beat the final boss yet, maybe one day I will get there!

Rating

My personal Rating of Super Mario Bros the Lost Levels is a 7.7!

    • hahaha, I am sorry for the Mario games that are upcoming, but we cannot please everyone with each review, which is why we review all kinds of games!

  3. I love the graphics in this game, as they happen to be very nostalgic to me. I am not sure I would be up for the challenge this game presents, but I am glad it made its way over to the West. Still, if you think this is hard, you should see the challenges presented by fan-made ROM hacks and challenges such as Kaizo ROM hacks and the Green Demon challenge in Super Mario 64!
