Wrath Aeon of Ruin review

Everyone gets a health potion! They are everywhere!

Wrath Aeon of Ruin review

Introduction

Today we are going to delve once again into a first-person shooter game, one that has won the poll in the month of March, Indeed, we are going to review Wrath Aeon of Ruin, is this a fun game to play, or should you avoid it? This is a game that uses an old engine, the Quake engine, and uses a early access model. A game that seems to be in early access for an infinite amount of time! Being initial released in 2019 as early access, they should have waited as there is not even a story yet. Or even a map to show where you are going.

What did I think before playing Wrath Aeon of Ruin?

While the game did look fun, the idea of it being in Early Access for over two years spells problems! I was hoping the game would be nearly finished now, but at first sight it seemed like it has just entered early access! Luckily, there are still updates bi-weekly. What this also entails, is that they should have not yet released this game yet. For more information, we went to the Steam page!

The Steam page

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1000410/WRATH_Aeon_of_Ruin/
While the Steam page does look good, the road map does say that the release should be this year, but I doubt it. The Steam page did not tell me exactly what to expect from this unfinished product. Without further ado, I started the game to throw myself into a horror show!

Rating

I rate Wrath Aeon of Ruin with a 5.5 before playing.
To be honest, it looks worse than original games released from the era that they tried to recreate, better off playing Turok!

Gameplay

The gameplay is rather hectic and confusing, especially since there is no story to propel you in the right direction. You spawn, have a knife with a leap ability, and that is it.  You enter a world that feels void, which is somehow the hub but not with clear markers of where the levels are, if you have collected the loot or anything else. This makes the game very boring, a campaign mode with missions would have worked better.

While the guns have alternate firing modes, the enemies are very unbalanced. Some enemies barely hurt you, while others do massive damage! You do not need to be careful as there is a healing potion in every corridor. While you do need to be careful as enemies will spawn randomly behind you. What is even more annoying, as I usually run into enemies while shooting them, they explode! Which deals huge chunks of damage! This is no fun as you walk around aimlessly, without a map, without a clue what to do!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Aeon Wrath of Ruin with a 3.6.
If you like wandering around aimlessly, without a map or goal, this is a good first-person shooter for you!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics of the game are better than you would have expected, it seems the developers worked more on getting the graphics right instead of the gameplay. There is also a lack of enemy variety, and the monsters are all the same in multiple levels.

Sound

The sound was quite boring as it is just the same soundtrack. I barely heard any difference in tones. The sound effects are quite loud, thus I muted the game eventually.

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Wrath Aeon of Ruin with a 1.9.
While the graphics are good, the soundtrack and sound effects are horrible.

What did I think after playing Wrath Aeon of Ruin?

I was displeased a lot of what this game had to offer, there were not many guns or enemies, it is very unclear as to on what level or episode I am playing. The fact that also every enemy explodes also does not help. While there are item artifacts that can help, these are short-lived and very scarce.

While the shooting works fine, there are just too many enemies at once with how unbalanced the damage is. I bet that on higher difficulty you could die in one hit. This is where another huge problem kicks in, there is no save system or checkpoints, but rather skulls that you can use once to save. Which means saving before any big fight is not a good idea, while this did not bother me a lot since I do not save on levels, I foresee huge problems for a lot of people!

Rating

I rate Wrath Aeon of ruin with a 1.7 before playing.
I would wait a few years before playing this game, maybe it is finally released and finished then with a mini map! Or maybe even a goal on where to go!

What are my personal thoughts about Wrath Aeon of Ruin?

I made several characters, this was to test out difficulties. On the higher difficulties, a monster tickling you will kill you. On easy and normal, you are basically immortal. Adding to that, there are healing potions everywhere!

Rating

My personal Rating of Wrath Aeon of Ruin is a 1.1
I am just glad that I am finished with this game.

    • by saying that's a good game I wanted to say that it looked good because my sentiment to old FPS like Duke Nukem 3D, Heretic, Blood or Quake... if it is unbalanced then it is not good at all..

  5. Thanks for reviewing this game and warning about its poor quality. What a shame! Its cover art looks really cool and I also enjoy the in-game graphics, as I love good tributes to the past...but it does not seem this one is very good at all!

  6. Sounds like yet another old-school FPS clone, with all of the style but none of the substance or fun. I'm surprised it's rated so highly on Steam. Thanks for your honest opinion.
